Some will say it can never happen again but then history has a way of repeating its self, the only real advantage we have today is that the world is very fragmented, and we are more advanced that makes it much easier to recover from disaster but I wouldn't rule anything out at the moment because we've never had to shut most of the world down, so we have no idea what impact this can have. Also, we can't really compare Rome to the US, Rome was far more powerful if we looked at the other powers around at the time and compare that to the powers today, the US doesn't commend the same respect Rome did and nor can the US attack rich powers in the world like Rome could and for me, Rome as a power would be something like a modern day China which would make Rome about 4 times bigger than the US in how they can project power.
