The problem is that even if you do have insurance in the US, you're double-dipping, one for the insurance and two for what you have to cover out of pocket.
Now I don't know what the cost of insurance is, it likely depends on the quality of that insurance, but it all sounds like a scam to get money out of people twice over, through the insurance, and then out of pocket, regardless of if you have insurance or not.
Other modern countries have a simple system that you pay into a universal health care system and then you're covered and for many, even if you're not paying into the system, either being poor or honeless, you're still covered by the system.
The real benefit I find about this kind of system, even though we all pay into the system, it doesn't really feel like a burden on us and feels like part of the normal taxes and it's great to have peace of mind when you do need health care.
