It stands to reason, if you feel like you are looked after by your job and the system in the country, you're more likely to put more effort into being more productive, whereas if you feel the system doesn't care and the job is just a means to an end, that they don't care about your well-being, then you're more likely to do the minimum you can get away with.
In the case of the US, that ends up meaning Americans having to work longer hours and in many cases for poor wages, and it's not an ideal situation to be in, unless you work for yourself and then your productivity goes through the roof, but that's the case wherever you live in the world because of self-interest.
The irony is, it's also the case for lower hours, if the job had a set target of tasks I needed to do in a given time, I bet most of us would find ways of being more productive if it means we could go home an hour or two earlier.
The simple truth is, corporations are their own enemy, they are so desperate to gain profit at any cost by screwing over everyone, that they don't seem to see the big picture that a lot of workers are making very little effort in their job because of lack of respect from the company, and honestly, it's hard to blame these people, after all, respect goes both ways, me for instant, I could probably do 8 hours work in 6 hours, maybe even 4 hours depending on the job and I suspect a lot of us would be willing to do that if we were looked after better.
