Very true, hence the incentive argument she said doesn't hold much water, yes profit motives is a good incentive but as you said, a lot of this work is being done at a small scale and by universities, in many ways, being funded by taxpayers.
But big corporations are much better at PR and buying these small ones out.
The irony is in what she's said, it could actually be the opposite, if big corporations have less incentive to invest, it would allow the smaller ones to flourish, we could actually end up with more competition, lower prices and more drugs on the market.

What freaks me out about the US is all the adverts selling drugs, it's like they are vultures praying on the vulnerable in society that need help.
I'm surprised in this day and age that this is still allowed in a modern country, but the reason it's allowed is because the people allow it, basically, it's the wild west approach to capitalism, which works well enough but as corporations become bigger and more controlling over more industries, it actually ends up being a really bad thing, because it reduces innovation, it pushes prices up, it gives consumers less options and it weakens the governments power in being able to bring these companies in line, which is more or less what we are seeing in the US on health care and many other sectors, corporations are running the show not the government or the people, and that is only going to get worse as corporations get bigger unless the people and the government puts their foot down like they've done in Europe and most of the developed world.
