It really depends on your house, where I live in the UK, I've got enough space on the house that I can have around 40 400 watt panels on the house and the garage, and I'm fortunate enough that I've got no obstacles from trees or anything else blocking the light.
As you say, the actual hardware is quite cheap now, but you have to be careful on the ones doing the installation, that can make a massive difference on the price from one to another even on the same setup, so you have to be careful with the scams that will charge way more than the setup is, but ideally, if you can do the setup yourself, then it would be really cheap, but there are many options where you can get good deals on installations, there's also tax incentives to lower the overall cost a lot, which if I'm not mistaken, I think some new ones just started this February which according to my friend, would reduce the overall cost in half for a lot of the average solar setups.
But like you said, it really does depend on your home in the UK for how many you can have, but with how cheap solar is getting, it's opening up more options in how we can use solar, so not just on the roof.
