I think in the longer run, it will make more sense to have on site with your house then to have massive wind farms, for one the cost is reduced a lot, you need far fewer cables, it's also a lot more security for your energy needs and likely to work out cheaper in the long run.
Mix that up with solar and as battery tech gets better, I have to wonder what the actually point will be of big wind farms the tech gets good enough that most of us could do it on site, especially as cost goes down and efficiency goes up, the other real advantage is that you won't have to be connected to the grid once battery tech is good enough, that will reduce cost as you have a lot more control over it, another advantage is that it's a lot quieter and would likely do far less harm to wild life.
So yes I can understand the merits of big wind farms for now in producing a lot of energy in the right locations but I think in the long run as the tech gets better, scales down and produces more energy, a lot more people would prefer to generate the energy on site and this will likely be the case for solar as well, so combine wind and solar together with the right battery tech and I suspect you could generate all your energy needs almost anywhere.
