That's true to a degree, you have to find out what people want even thought they don't realize they want it, it's mostly how new markets come about.
But the risk is higher and it's doesn't always pay off and I think that is where Toyota is scared off, they know they have to invest big and there are no guarantees after retooling their manufacturing plants that they would be successful in the EV world and it's probably a big part in why so many are slow to change with EV cars.
But you can't stop progress, if the old industry doesn't move, new companies will spring up that delivers and push the old companies aside, this has happened many times, even to big companies, most of the other car companies seem to have got the message and are going in with EV cars but are catching up, Toyota seems to be in denial and that could be costly to the company that I have to wonder if the Japanese government won't step in and put a lot of pressure on them to change, a bit like how the German government did with having a Tesla plant in Germany, right in the backyard to light the fire under the German auto industry to change.
