Hey, remember, Russia started all this, they can't complain that the west is getting much tougher on them.
The funny thing is, whiles Russia pays a high price, other countries around the world want to fill that void that Russia is leaving behind, after all, that is a lot of money Russia is leaving on the table, something others are desperate to want to fill that void because this is one in a lifetime kind of deal for them, after all, it's not offern that a market as rich as the EU has half it's energy needs put on the global market.
The question is, who are going to be the smart ones to fill that void, whoever does it stand to gain hundreds of billions per years.
To put it another way, Russia loss is someone elses gain, after all, the EU market is too big and too rich for others to not want to fill that market.

EU countries knew this was going to happen, European politicians have been saying that it's likely Russia will turn off gas for weeks now and have likely planned ahead for that, basically, it didn't come as a surprise to anyone that it would happen after the G7 meeting.
The irony is, the EU actually wanted this to happen, the EU have wanted to cut oil and gas off for months but found it difficult to do because of many EU members not wanting that action, this basically forces the issue in what the EU actually want because now those few EU countries that didn't want to change on this, have no choice now.
As for Putin, he's doing it because he's got little choice, he's desperate and using every trick in the book to try and get the Europeans to bend, the reality is, Putin is making it much worse and much sooner for Russia.

Actually that was always the plan from the EU and US, basically, wait till the EU countries diversify away from Russian oil and gas and once that happens, target other countries that are buying cheap oil and gas from Russia because the EU and US are not doing all this only for others to prop up the Russian economy.
To put it another way, there's very likely going to be a lot of pressure from the EU, US and west on China, India and others that buy from Russia, probably even tariffs of the amount those countries are benefitting from cheap oil and gas from Russia, the idea is to wipe out that benefit, whiles at the same time, making goods from those countries more expensive so businesses will want to leave those regions to find other cheaper alternatives which there are a lot of countries that would love to take that business away from them.
The truth is, those countries can't afford to get on the wrong side of the west because they trade a lot with them, losing access or having restricted trade won't do China or India any favours whereas a lot of the companies that used China and India for cheap labour will just look elseware and at the end of the day, the western market is far more important to them than Russia is

Actually, the EU was ready for it, politicians for months have been saying Putin is likely going to switch off the gas pipeline, it came as no surprise that it happened after the G7 meeting because the west saw it coming.
Putin did it because he's getting desperate, but the problem is that EU countries have been preparing for this for some time, gas storage are almost full in a lot of countries, EU countries are also getting about half it's gas from other countries around the world and that's likely going to keep going up.
Basically, there isn't much of an issue, apart from tightening their belts and high prices, but that will pass.
Still I do find it amusing how some of the media around the world thinks there's going to be black-outs and power cut all over the place where in reality, it's likely not going to be that different then last winter apart from the high fuel cost and tightening their belts, basically, it's not that big of a deal and they've been through far worse.
Still, people will see what they want to see and not what is lol.
