@importantjohn I think the real problem is that the lock down has been too soft where many are braking the rules, either way, I think we should have acted sooner rather than later with what we was seeing in China and Italy so yes there is a lot of blame to go around and I hope the key people are held to account on that.

@angelaortenzi-maccoll2917 Italy did two lock downs much sooner than the UK did it, one was the region of Lombardy region and about a week or so after that, the entire country, from what I remember, it took another 2 or so weeks before the UK went into lock down which wasn't good enough.

I still tune in because I don't want to disconnect in that if I don't keep up, I could end up not caring with what is going on and that would be sad, so it's best to keep up with what's going on.

I have to agree, this is getting worse than we saw in Italy and Spain when the UK had far more advanced warning on this, key people in government should be held to account on this.

@dragonfly6908 They didn't shut things down in the country at that time and that was key, closing boarders with each other was pointless once the virus was in and it was clear that it was in most countries at that time, just we didn't detect it very well. In any case, the real mistake was not clamping down hard on it early on and that likely will cost a lot of lives whiles prolonging the economic damage. Now that doesn't mean closing boarders after that can't be effective, it likely can because each country has it's own policy in how to lock the country down, like Italy for instance, it won't be wise of them to open up it's borders with some other EU members until they get it under control and that is the case globally, so a quick return to normally is not going to happen for years and even then I suspect things will change after this event.

@dragonfly6908 I just hope the people of the world hold a lot of these governments to account because their actions have cost lives and it's clear many of them were putting the economy first before the well-being of the people, scary yet is how many governments will want to open up the economy again even when it's too early and more people die because the virus will start to spread again, governments that have shown signs they want to open up early is the UK, US and maybe a few European countries, that could be costly if things flair up again.

@dragonfly6908 Mistakes were done all over the place but in the west we really messed up on this one and I suspect we are going to get a lot of tough decisions on a lot of these governments once the dust settles. As for the virus, it does seem unpredictable, I even heard it's already mutated twice but with all the fake news going around, I can't really say if there is any truth to that but considering the size of the population today, it wouldn't surprise me if it does mutate. Anyway, I suspect the shut down will last till near the end of summer, some countries will want to try and open up sooner than that but the virus could rebound back again, so lock downs are still likely to be in place on and off likely until the end of the year and even then, the next 2 or 3 years they will have to be careful because there is a fair chance this virus could be lurking in the backgrounds and still spreading in low numbers. The real worry I see is the developing countries, they don't have the hearth care and testing equipment to get to grips with that and things are likely much worse in those countries then we realize, I think they are going to need a lot of help from the rich countries and I hope they give them that help even if it's out of self-interest because at the end of the day, things won't go back to normal until we get rid of this virus worldwide.

I suspect a lot of health care systems in the world will get a lot more attention now thanks to this, heck it wouldn't surprise me if a real push for universal health care in the US gets pushed up the agenda with everything that is going on.

@jamesjennison881 I wouln't knock it just yet, public views on many things can swing a lot because of this virus and lock down and considering how important the health care system is, it wouldn't surprise me if universal health care gets a lot more support among Americans now, this could be our aftermath of the second world war moment where a lot of good change came out of something bad and not just for the US but for the EU and the world as well. I do know one thing, it's highly unlikely to be business as usually once the dust settles like some people like to think.

@jamesirvine2191 I agree we should have taken it more serious at that point but I can understand western governments at that point thinking it wouldn't spread to the west and stay more localized like SARS was, but the moment Italy was showing real signs of a problem and we saw a few cases in other countries including the UK, there was no excuse from that, we should have locked down then even if it might have looked alarmist at the time, that likely would have saved lives and the lock down likely would be shorter, all we have done is made things worse.

@importantjohn That's not the point I'm getting at, in the case of Italy, it hit hard pretty quickly and it was easy to understand why they didn't take it too serious because like many other viruses of the past, they thought it wouldn't land here, many western governments thought that, but as things took off in Italy, the UK and others around the world should have acted much sooner as they had hindsight on their side, China and Italy didn't really have that where everyone else did.

@angelaortenzi-maccoll2917 Thing is, almost all western countries were too slow and we all repeated the same mistakes but some countries had no excuses like the UK and US because they could see what was going on in China and Italy so we should have been ready for it whereas it seemed our governments were dismissive of it until it was too late, that for me is gross incompetents on both the UK and US and both governments and key people should be held to account because I suspect a lot more people will die that didn't need too because of their actions.

@importantjohn Well actually, a very strong lock down would likely mean we can open up sooner rather than later, the problem is our government in the UK has been too soft and people are still going out a lot, that is likely going to keep us under house arrest for longer and do far more economic damage to the country, either way, some Asian countries seems to be doing a much better job of it.

@jamesirvine2191 I'm from the UK as well, I just hope the human race learns from a lot of these mistakes we are doing and real change that benefits us all will happen after the dust settles, the jury is still out on that one.

@angelaortenzi-maccoll2917 It's hard to say, this isn't normal times and once governments try to pass on the burden of this damage to the tax payers and not the super rich and corporations, people will get angry and considering the numbers on how many this is going to impact, governments are going have to be extra careful in what they do with the public because they were not happy even before this virus, hence Trump, Brexit, the popularise movement and so on, this virus and the economic fall out leaves the government very little room in how they can pass the burden onto the public and that must be a real worry for the upper 1% because they could be the prime target to take this out on. The irony is that I was supposed to be going on holiday to Milan in Italy in July and clearly that isn't going ahead now

@jamesirvine2191 Maybe but I love to see them try and put this burden on the public when the last 10 years have not been that great and people have been angry over that time, I highly doubt governments can afford to take this out on the public and the rich elites and corporation are an easy target, many like the EU and it's members were going after them before this virus, now it will be a lot easier for them to do with a lot of backing of the public and not just in EU countries but I can see a lot of governments doing the same thing around the world. So not only have they lost their shirt because of this virus but after the virus passes, they are going to lose their pants as well lol and I really hope they fight it as well so they lose more than just their pants lol.
