It's actually quite surprising that the west did, at the end of the day, Russia only has an economy in the size between Spain and Italy, so it's quite small really and why Russia isn't a threat to the EU or NATO countries unless nukes are used which god help us all if the world went that route.

We should remember that this is Putin's war, but with that said, part of the blame goes on the Russian people, after all, Putin didn't get into power by magic, enough Russians support him to put him there so a big part of the blame is on the Russia people. In any case, regardless of what happens in Ukraine, a lot of trust has been lost in Russia which is likely going to do the economy damage for at least the next decade, EU countries will continually look for alternative energy sources regardless of what Russia does now, investment in Russia is likely going to drop a lot, even after the war and maybe even if Putin gets deposed. When you break trust, that's what really does the damage and it takes a long time to rebuild that trust, that's what's happened to Russia and now they've got a very uncomfortable decade or two to face.

Putin is a dictator, Trump wanted to be a dictator, Trump even used a lot of the same play book on the media, court system to create fear and turn the public against these institutions and if Trump had enough supporters, he could have been a real threat to US democracy, lucky for the US, Trump is seen as a joke lol.
