It's because governments like to focus on things like how the economy is doing or how low unemployment is doing, you know, things that have little impact on the average person.
The fact is, the like of Trump, Brexit and popularise movement have been happening around the world because too many people keep getting left behind, that situation could be worse because of the recent high energy bills and inflation.
Quality of life improvement needs to be done from a bottom up approach, which clearly GDP per capita doesn't do, it's also far more important to focus more on quality over wealth, just look at the Europeans in the EU, the quality of life is better for them because they put more focus in that area over wealth and ultimately, what really matters to the average person, wealth and real happiness?
We need new ways of measuring progress that focus on quality from the bottom up, GDP numbers don't work as it considers everything equal in an economy, which clearly isn't, especially in the US, which is one of the least equal countries in the modern world.
