Religion is probably the biggest reason why we are not seeing any big powers in the Middle East, religion tends to hold back growth in a lot of sectors that harms the economy a lot, in fact we see that in the west where countries with less religion tend to be more economically successful, in fact, the Republic of Ireland before joining the EU was a basket case, now with far less religion in the country, they are one of the richest countries per capita. Now don't get me wrong, religion isn't the only reason for the problems in the Middle East but it's a big part of the reason.
