What you have to remember that it's much easier to blame others for your own problems, the UK and especially UK governments were deflecting blame on the EU, basically using them as a scapegoat for the failings that the UK government was doing, it was a way to take heat away from UK governments and the mess they keep creating and clearly that has been exposed after Brexit because now they can't blame the EU for the mess the UK is in, that's the only silver lining with Brexit, is that it's going to bring a lot more heat on UK governments and is opening peoples eyes that the real problem was never the EU, but was much closer to home.
Like you said, in many of the areas that Brits and the UK government were complaining about and wanted independence so they could change things, the reality is, they could already change things in those areas whiles we were in the EU, but personally, I think the real agenda of Brexit was that the Tories wanted to lower standards across the board in the UK, a bit like how the US has done it, which has many will know, that would have been a lot harder to do when the UK was in the EU because the EU sets high standards in a lot of areas, members can have higher than those standards but can't have lower standards, that's what I think Brexit was all about and if true, the British best keep a close eye on UK governments watering down rights that you take for granted as many of them could be watered down or scrapped entirely over the coming decades.
