The only way to avoid human extinction at this point is solar geoengineering. Even if we stopped all emissions, temperatures will keep going up due to melting permafrost.

@hamish1309 Data doesn't lie.

There is another way out of it, and that is rapid depopulation from nuclear war and cooling from nuclear winter.

If we stopped all emissions now, temperatures will immediately go up to 3 degrees by 2100 due to decline in aerosols from pollution. It will be 6 degrees by 2500. The last time the Earth was at 420 ppm of co2 was during the Miocene, when the Earth was 6 degrees warmer. Since it takes 500 years for the equilibrium (long term) temperature to be reached, we should be at 6 degrees by 2500 years (once you adjust for albedo from melting ice, which takes time). Pollution is actually cooling the planet down by 1 degrees C. It's called global dimming.

And this isn't even including tipping points from permafrost, drying peatlands (which has two times more co2 stored than permafrost), thawing clathrates.

@hamish1309 And it takes a while for ice ages to happen. Things don't freeze overnight. The peak of the next glacial period is 40,000 years from now.

Needs to happen. I have my bunker.

@hamish1309 Glacial period is supposed to happen 40,000 years later.

@hamish1309 The last ice age ended 20,000-10,000 years ago.
