Cause portugal was the rulling class for many centuries that the population was used. The one's who actually identifies as portuguese went to portugal proper and it's descendants are still there. It's from this comunity that the present prime minister is from.

@mysticonthehill the founder of the country and 1st king beat the shit of his own mother. Historical "heros" of a country are always human first and thus it's complex. Salazar was a hero to the people when he gave stability and avoided portugal presence in ww2 but he was a devil when he maintain and improved censorship and opressive institutions. The first king, afonso henriques is a hero as he founded the country and freed it from the muslim rulers but he was a devil who would hurt his own mother. Most countries heros can also be horrible human beings at the same time. Hope to have helped 😁

Yes. American cotton was already established and mass produced and the sea journey was faster. Colonial enterprise meant investment before return and with only 1 buyer, also a lot less return from the investment than its american counterpart.

That wasn't going to work. Portuguese rulling class at the time (and aince always) wasn't a skin shade and thus portuguese oficials were discriminated in SA, one of which my dad cause he was too brown to be treated as the officer he was. Imagine this happening often and voilá deal dead.

Interesting the cognitive dissonance. The soviets, maoists (comunists) were enslavers (ghoulags etc), racists (pol pot) and very imperialist. But strangely u think it would be diferent under these. It's a choice of poison not antidote.

@olivierkigotho7639 interestingly both claim that none were imposed in their pure form, a kind of lack of self awarness. It's not something exclusive of the global south IMO it's just more visible or less talked about in other places. It's very hard to in vision a sistem that is neither when taking into account the fact that we now are global and very conected. This last one scares me as we are plumeting into a cicle of crisis.

@northumbriabushcraft1208 have done london twice and scotland once. I also have a bucket list. And yeah portugal is still affordable. Best of luck on that list, it's big and expensive. This year gonna do Madeira 😁
