Wasn't the rulling class fortune based on slave trade? Not very democratic nor enlightened if the economic driving force is enslavement.

Isn't it weird that history has these harsh changes withing generations time-line? I mean 50 years is nothing- it's grandpa to grandson transformation!
7
Still is that way - nothing changed.

@yungsteaksauceakalilwasher6571 comentator nationality makes zero diference. Until the international trade of slaves was banned a lot of powerful people were rich cause of slave trade as it was a fast way to make fast money.

So long everyone payed taxes to the ottomans there was litle incentive to actual exert full authority. This formula actually made them last a long time, manly cause everyone else was fighting one another - a lot of tribalism perhaps.
6
small detail: somalis aren't arabs.
5
With the amount of internal power grabs and rebelion - its a miracle it lasted so long.
3
Not the same: europe is several national and linguistic identities. Mena region had a linguistic, religious and identity commonality for the majority of the population.
3
@rushBbro1234 maybe that's an occurrence due to geographic location where everyone meet: africa, asia and europe - making new arrivals a constant.
3
@Armo Moose doma makes a lot of sence, the culture is known to be very much conected to music and dancing.
3
@pika_pika_02 they consider themselves part of the islamic world, but they have a distinguished somali identity. U might be confusing with a group of sudanese (who have had the sudanese political power), those yes, have an arab identity, but that cause they descend from a mix of sudanese with arabs who settled there.

@Arsenal1940 mith. Galleys for example.

It's a vast group. Some have it good, some live under the poverty line.

@z.p9997 and if he had focused on europe than he would be eurocentric. New racism - make anything become white man bad by comparing everything to europe. That time was politically unstable a bit everywhere which made war a constant be it internal or external, be it europe or ottoman. The difference is that europe kept expanding and ottoman were stuck trying to fix internal issues, price that u pay when ur too big. The end - no skin shade necessary to add. Also albeit turmoil european monarchies were pretty much the same few families for long time which helps sustain a long term project.

@Handle0108 San Reno conference. Sykes-picot was denied by league of nations, never took efect. Peeps avoid san reno cause that would question lebanon, jordan, syria and iraq as much as israel.

Yup just that present times there are less assassinations.

@AY-qz3pu under the ottomans internal fighting for power in each province made as unstable as if each province was it's own country.
1
@AY-qz3pu half of the violence (like other places) wasn't reported, abject poverty was generally accepted by the rulling class, due to the block to the printing press iliteracy was the norm, slavery was an accepted business. The difference is that there was no internacional standard to compare and there was no internet. The violence and suffering was still there. But hey, let's pretend for the sake of narratives 😂

You think that because a lot of it desapeared in concentration camps.

They lost the conection along the way because they use oral transmission thus no book to point to a direction. Nowadays I think they see themselves as european. There is portion that is perfectly integrated, unfortunatelly media only speaks about the ones in trouble. In some parts they mixed so much that they can't bee seen as an ethical group but a cultural one.

Found the inferiority complex justifying racism group 😂

@عليياسر-ذ5ب wasn't roman, wasnt holy and wasn't an empire 😂

@San_Vito that's exactly how it was during muslim conquests. Only the ones who submitted survived 🤷♀️it's the definition of conquest.

Too many figures wanted to be the totalitatian/ authoritarian leader of said union, and none accepted someone else.
