  1. It was not Ukraine wanting to join NATO which triggered the SMO. The SMO coincided with Ukraine trying to join the EU.

  2. Expand NATO to include both Ukraine and Russia and Article 5 is nullified. Russia was meant to join NATO at same time as Ukraine originally. Ukraine joining means Ukraine can attack rest of NATO and means Russia cannot really trigger Article 5.

  3. Two nullifying steps for NATO. 1) Bring Poland and Ukraine together. and/or 2) Let Ukraine join NATO. (Let Moldova join NATO is perhaps a third.) Either way leaves no strong border between NATO and Russia (or EU and Russia). No enforceable border means no enforceable Article 5 means no enforceable NATO.
