  1. Russia hit a big problem in Ukraine generally when the West pointed out that food flow to many countries had to continue or blame could fall on Russia. Oops. That made it awkward to take Odessa. Indeed, for humanitarian reasons and to maintain support for its operation, Russia had to ensure food could still be transported from Odessa, especially during harvest period. How can Russia possibly take Odessa without interrupting much needed food supply from Ukraine? This argument was a big win for the West to throw a spanner in the works for Russian ambitions to take back Odessa. Well, as a diplomatic and humanitarian concession Russia can avoid taking Odessa during the summer period when there is the great Ukrainian harvest. Once harvest shipments are over, things could change in Russia's plans. It can show the world it did not prevent summer and autumn food shipments, but then take Odessa after that, in winter or more likely in spring next year. Then it needs to do it quickly so next year's shipments are not stopped but this means it has to take all of Ukraine by next year's harvest so it can control the food shipments when Odessa is in its control. Or make some clever mechanism to ensure Ukraine can ship food from a Russian-controlled Odessa. This all makes it a bit tricky for Russia but Odessa is a pearl worth the big cost. I think.
