Businesses using software more than producing it find issues hiring engineers or engineering minded developers, no matter if the business is big and rich, for reasons, I think, like salary scales being too low. They sometimes resort to giving more valuable developers a manager or executive salary but then the developer is at risk of being given executive responsibilities to weigh them down. Cloud needs engineering mindset and know-how. Then less knowledgable devs without engineering prowess get jealous and antagonistic too. Lots of challenges for big businesses and some fail to support Cloud-based software production properly. It needs knowledge right to the top.

Looking at benefits to a big business of going Cloud and serverless, it is clouded (sorry for the pun) by the Cloud provider’s ability to keep the financial benefits to themselves by their unilateral setting of their prices. There are too few big Cloud providers to gain benefit of competition. AWS, Azure, Google. Too few. Economy of scale and innovation of technology can all benefit Cloud provider with no guarantee they will share the benefit with customers. Bigger customers might be able to force beneficial pricing but even this is not guaranteed to last. So future tech advancement of large scale benefits might not be shared with customers and capitalism means they probably won’t be shared unless more Cloud providers come along to compete and push down prices. Maybe Mr Branson will do something to give us budget Cloud.
