  4.  @kevinwaalker  indeed. That conflict escalated into a full-scale war in the mid-1960s when the United States began sending large numbers of troops to fight in Vietnam. I doubt this proxy war now can last five years before escalating, especially if this counteroffensive is launched and attacks Crimea.

  5. The main objective of the offensive might have always been for the West and Ukraine to save face. Maybe it has already succeeded and therefore need never actually happen.
