  1. Danes can't even agree internally what it means to be "Danish". The other day the right wing nationalist party said it involved going to church at christmas and easter. If that's the level of conversation they are going to have they can - to be brief - fuck off. What matters is not whether you are "Danish" or who defines what that means. What matters is that you believe secular liberal values like freedom of speech, gender equality, equality under the law and democracy.

  3. I'll bet you a whole nights beers that most Americans couldn't tell a Dane from a Norwegian or a Swede - or a Icelandic for the matter. Heck, I've even been stopped by a German in Paris who couldn't tell that I wasn't German. But anyway... if you are going to decide who can live in a country based on being "Danish" you better well have a non-idiotic explanation of what that is. Listening to someone preach about an imaginary friend two time a year is NOT such an explanation. Neither is language btw... Lots of people (including Danish citizens - most prominently the crown prince) marry people with a different native language. The issue is not some subjective criteria like "Danish" which everyone can have their preferred subjective definition (and the religious right of course want to elevate their religion) ... the issue is whether you want to live in a free secular society with secular liberal values or not. ... if that's not the case, - by all means, throw people out. But welcome those who want to live in a free world - people like say - Ayan Hirsi Ali and Maajid Nawaz. And I don't care whether they speak the language or go to church.

  4. Cataline Brinno Who said I "denied cultural identity" ? I just object to these religious people in Denmark trying to define that their specific way of life is the definition of "Danish". (one reason being that I know how the idiot spokesperson for the party who said it has a long history of using political power to promote his religion). I feel "Danish" and I will very much defend much of how Danish society works. But I'm not going to hit other people in the head with not being "Danish enough" if they don't share my views on religion.

If you Identify as "muslim first" then you are obviously not "danish" ... but then you have also moved the definition of "danish" to being subjective - about how people feel them selves - and not by some objective criteria on whether you attend church. I'm perfectly fine with "Danish" being about what you feel in your heart. But then - for the purpose of knowing who to take in as citizens - I think it's much more relevant whether those people actually want to live in a society with secular liberal values, freedom of speech and gender equality. Heck! ... even an American would be welcome if he didn't have theocratic or autocratic tendencies. (sorry Trump, sorry Pence)

  10. +Diimaa Fine ... I've listened. ... and I find it interesting as history and necessary to understand culture, but also ridiculous to believe the stores are real in the 21st century. Wrt. it being "a crime" - that sounds like language which contradicts your claim to not want to impose your superstition on the rest of society. ... But if it can make you feel better, I read Norse mythology with my children every evening. ;-)

  11. +Diimaa yeah ... sure... and I'm of course totally convinced that you are in a position to objectively judge the anthropology and historic evidence. But of course, - you've got a point. About 1000 years ago Norse mythology was empirically shown to not be able to withstand the demonic spirits coming from the middle east. Btw... I said we read the stories. I didn't say I taught them to have it as a religion. We'll read Tolkien next.
