> Tine Woodbe Libertarianism is many things... as a geo-libertarian, I find many of Austin Petersons views naive or leaving out many important factors. The whole FDA discussion for instance, I feel is totally misguided. This is not about putting a gun to peoples head and "force" them to make "good" food. It's about ensuring transparency and providing customers with factual information which they couldn't otherwise get. We have rules about how much lead there can be in (say) water, mostly because if it was up to consumers alone to discover health problems it would most likely take far too long time where people got poisoned until Austin Petersons idea of basing it all on consumer reviews would "solve" the problem the capitalistic way.

Michael Shermer was on very early.

> Tine Woodbe Geo-libertarianism is not "anti-government". But we have much more strict ideas of what government should do than authoritarian ideologies like conservatism and socialism. Personally I think many who call them selves "libertarians" has completely misunderstood the basic classical liberal concept that your personal freedom only extends so far as to not infringe the equal freedom of others. (as witnessed by the amount of science denial which has crawled out of the woodwork wrt. Climate Change in "libertarian" circles). This seems to go for Austin Petersen too. > I think the Libertarian movement would benefit from more cohesive, consistent messaging. Well... I don't ... I have no hopes of agreeing with anarcho-capitalists on much. It's IMNSHO just as utopian as communism. And that's why I'm happy I live in Europe where we just use the term "liberal" as it was originally meant. The only reason I say "libertarian" here (in english) is because the term "geo-libertarian" is something you can look up for a pretty precise definition on Wikipedia which actually describes my views. It's not called "geo-libertarian" in Denmark though. Here it's just a branch of classical liberalism inspired by Henry George and Thomas Paine.

> quintessenceSL I can't speak to how much the US has f*cked up the role of the FDA, but to think a parliament can manage the job without an expert institution to administer the "requirement for labeling and documenting/testing" is absurd. .... and it works pretty well in a country like Denmark where we have such a government office. Personally I'm NOT looking forward to anarchy in this area, so I have to go around spending time on verifying each and every thing I give to my children to eat only to find out I've been giving them something for years which a company had made unhealthy in an attempt to save money - and then "being happy" that I can sue their sorry ass (unless they declare bankruptcy). It's simply a waste of everybodys time not to preemptively ensure food is labeled correctly and that food you cannot expect the average consumer to have expert knowledge enough to evaluate whether is safe is simply not found in the supermarket. A society where you have to be a biochemist to shop is absurd.
