Hmmm this is very interesting... alotta possible explanations... For one I heard that when Britain invaded by the Saxons and Angles it was just the literatate elites with money who fled across the channel to seek refuge with celtic tribes already in Britainy. Second conversely I also heard that when Romans invaded Gaul the northern most Gaulic Celts fled to Britain to seek refuge in colony they established previously in Southern Britain. They did later push north after they arrived (not sure how far north) but couldn't push into Wales due to warlike nature of the tribes already existing there.

@fierceperedur The ancient Irish raided and colonized parts of coastal Wales after the collapse of Roman Britain. That might explain why the name is in both places.

I was about to say the exact same thing in a big rant before I deleted it lol.

Very interesting... Not that surprising as most americans who have ancestors dating back to this time period would have come to the same conclusions without doing the genetic research. It's particularly interesting that John Adam's ancestor immigrated too Braintree to me. I have distant ancestor who founded a couple college's in the early US and one is from Braintree. His family came from the same part of England. As for rest I'd say it's more or less accurate. In my own family, without genetic testing and just going on records, I found we have roots in various parts of Southern England, Northern Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Switzerland, Southern Germany, and Northern France. The last three being interrelated. Possibly some Danish and Norwegian from the Viking presence in Scotland but that's unconfirmed. It's interesting reading about the lives of your distant ancestors. In some I've found mirrors to certain family members today. It's also interesting to learn about the motivations behind their immigration which are almost always never black and white.

Whoah... you must have done some serious research to find all that out! 😳

@LJBSullivan I think that's highly dependent on the particular areas in the US your from. The vast majority of population that made of the original colonies depleted itself in the Civil War and the Western Expansion. More people were dying in this process then were being born so more needed to brought in. After the Civil War North-East needed the Irish, Italians, Poles, and others to help rebuild economic base. The large portion of the people who fought took advantage of the Homestead Act after the war, to build new lives out west (and maybe forget the horrors of that war too), and so left in large numbers after the war. That was great for the Gov but terrible for Northern Industry ( and the native americans :\ ) which lost it's former base. So alot of people who are descended from original colonist at least partially or fully don't actually reside in that part of the country anymore. Much of the infamous culture of the Old Wild West was defined in large part by these people. They wanted to brake away from the puritanical nuttiness of their ancestors and embrace a more relaxed flexible world view. Which became the foundation of the modern, relativity more open Mountain West cultures and extremely open West Coast Cultures, that are pretty much the polar opposite of the old puritanical cultures that originated them.

Everyone has a favorite founding father, but all were had very interesting lives, including Adams.

@klyanadkmorr Yeah that was commonly practiced early on but not the norm. He himself came from a scandalous background so being product of bucked culture norms probably didn't have issues doing it himself. Benjamin Franklin was certainly no saint either lol but being so immensely talented it was overlooked. Most did not marry their slaves but some did. Pretty much all fathered illegitimate children by them at some point for better or worse.

Why shouldn't they be allowed to be curious about where they come from? Nearly everyone is even if you don't like what you find. Connecting to your past can help to ground you in the present.

@fierceperedur Possibly but probably not the vast majority... no way to know for sure. I know later during the religious strife in 16th century some joined the northern ireland colonization effort. That's only other possibility I can think of.

No. Many had connections to Wales or Scotland but that was always deemphasized due to English prejudice. It's almost always politically expedient to emphasize with the ruling class to get anywhere. So many anglicized everything from their names, religion, or even their culture. Brittonic Celts lost to the Anglo-Normans centuries before this and by this time had long given up trying to fight. Most just wanted to live in peace and provide for their families. Continuing that ancient long lost cause was counter productive in that regard.
