  1. We aren't united in that sense anymore. It's more that we are united because we always been united and separately would not function very due to centuries of interdependence.

  2. Not Sparta but the Roman Republic. America isn't Spartan in a economic sense like Sparta was, very much the opposite, economically we are extremely dynamic. We seem to inadvertently coppied not just Republican Rome but Punic Carthage. We grew ourselves through violent conquests but behind that conquests their was a equally sophisticated aggressive expanding mercantile class consolidating every gain. Eventually the latter outgrew the former, usurping control of the whole system, for it's own interests. However unlike Carthage or Rome, where all these political machinations were very much out in the open, here they very stayed under the radar purposefully. Before anyone realized what had happened it was already too late. Business and Government here are now one and the same.
