Boris isn't going to get a different deal and he knows it. There is no alternative to the backstop. We had 3 years to find one and nothing.

@genericusername3212 "we should walk away and let the EU stew for a while. Or collapse...whatever" - Why? The EU is only getting stronger because it really does have countries lining up trying to get in. They just made a fantastic FTA deal with Japan which we will miss out on - cheaper technology/cars etc... They just made a big deal with 3 South American countries ripe for development great for exports. We would have benefited from that too but not any more. The EU is not going to collapse because why would it? The EU is a major net benefit to the countries involved.

@genericusername3212 The membership fee is small change for the EU. It is there to support ADMINISTRATION and GOODWILL projects like education and developing economic growth in poorer areas. But compared to the TRADE the member fee is irrelevant. No one is pretending that Britain leaving the EU doesn't hurt EU countries as well as Britain. But the EU is 27 countries and we are 1. The EU has more than 700 trade deals and we have NONE. Do the math.

@genericusername3212 "the EU is in financial melt down" - The EU doesn't remain together because of the membership feas. It stays together because 27 countries are conducting TRILLIONS of Euros worth of trade far more cheaply than they ever could without it. Those TRILLIONS of dollars in mutual trade far outweigh any "membership fee". Stop reading the propaganda and go read a respectable economics expert. They all say no-deal is a disaster for Britain.

@GH-oi2jf The backstop literally says that as soon as Britain devises a solution "tailored specifically to the problem of preserving the Good Friday Agreement" it will automatically remove itself. The only purpose of the backstop is to prevent a war in Northern Ireland while Britain devises an alternative solution. What is so unreasonable about that if such a solution can be found?

@GH-oi2jf I found this on twitter. It is a very good summary of the situation between Boris and the EU: Johnson: "Get rid of the backstop and we'll find an alternative arrangement." EU: "Find an alternative arrangement and we'll get rid of the backstop."

@GH-oi2jf Violence in Northern Ireland will likely start very quickly with a no-deal exit. We don't have time to leave the Single Market before figuring out a solution to the problem that we spent 3 years trying to solve and still can't come up with a solution for.

@genericusername3212 You mean shoot ourselves in the head because we are too crybaby to live up to the international agreements we signed up to?
1
@genericusername3212 Yes, running away from your responsibilities is a very cowardly and small minded thing to do. Britain is going to lose so much respect for this. Doesn't bode well for getting a another decent trade deal if this is how we behave.

@genericusername3212 "we have countries queuing up to sign deals" No they are not. The few that are currently tell us we need to leave the EU with a deal and to stop this no-deal nonsense. We were negotiating a deal with Canada but they said if we leave the EU without a deal then the Canada deal is off. Furthermore we are absolutely desperate for deals so we will never get equitable terms with anyone we make a deal with. It will take years for trade with anyone we make a deal with to make them so dependent on our trade that we will be able to negotiate better terms. WE ALREADY HAVE THE BEST DEAL that will never be beaten because zero tariff open borders is impossible to improve on. And transport to near by places is obviously cheaper than transport to the other side of the world.
