You don't pay any tax when you die. The person who receives the house has done zero work to pay for that house. They are getting it for nothing. It is income and therefore should be taxed.

@JackieDean-ll8qn How is my point not clearly stated in my post?

We already did that with Brexit.

@jacobmcguire3336 Why were you paying the mortgage on someone else's house? The house could have been put in your name or you could have had joint ownership. If I get a job at the local corner shop, I don't also pay for the owner's mortgage. That is their responsibility out of their own earnings.

@chrishodgson3220 "you think your kids should have to pay tax on that house that you’ve already bought and payed tax on" - Yes. We don't tax money in this country we tax people. When someone gets income (by any means) then that person should be taxed from that income.

@theant9821 "it has already been taxed" - No. We are not taxing things like houses and farms. We tax people when they receive income. People pay tax on their inheritance. The inheritance is not being taxed, the person receiving it is being taxed. If my father leaves me a house - I have not paid any tax wrt that income. So I must be taxed on it. If I work in a factory, I do not argue that I must not pay tax because the money used to pay me has already been taxed when the factory earned that money from customers who also paid tax. No. We do not tax the thing, we tax the person when money comes to them.

@aryastark772 "There are 1000000 more ways to raise the money they need" - Not really, the government gets its money from tax. If they don't tax millionaire land owners then they will have to tax you and me more. There is no magic money tree.

@jacobmcguire3336 " Why on earth would you think it's OK for the government to just take a chunk of that in tax?" - Because every penny you earn and the ability to have a nice house and to live a clean and safe life are all available to you because you live in a structured society with police, roads, hospitals, schools etc... If you don't want to pay tax, then you want to live in an anarchy with no police, no schools, no hospitals and see how your life would be living like that.
2
@davidramishvili9696 "why is my son obligated to pay inheritance tax?" - Because you said it yourself when you said *"house is under my name"*. You should put the house under your son's name or under both of your names.

@TasteBudTreasures-hq2nw No. Income is money that "comes in".

I want to see the maths because both the farmers and the government can not be right about who this affects and it is objectively possible to have a definitive answer to that question. Maths is maths. Why doesn't Channel 4 News do the maths and tell us who's right here?
1
@MrDesmondPot Well, I presume the figures were calculated by experts in the Civil Service and the government is unlikely to be wrong. Buy this isn't something the audience should be left wondering about when there is a definitive answer.

We can have food security back any time we like if we rejoin the EU Single Market. The EU can feed itself and then some. But the UK will never be able to feed itself. We will always rely on imports unless we rejoin the EU.

What is outrageous is that people can inherit millions without doing a days work or paying a penny in tax for their entire lives.
