The Tories give the middle classes just enough to keep them voting Tory. They severely kneecap upward mobility for the working class to keep the middle classes from becoming larger than absolutely necessary.

@CBA CBA "why not reduce taxes universally?" - Because we need healthy infrastructure (roads and trains etc..), a decent Health System that keeps people at work and productive and investment to produce more areas of growth in the UK. There is no magic money tree. We need to pay tax to have a decent country.

@filmwork1 "someone earning under 35k is a net loss to the system" - How can people earning under 35k be a "net loss to the system" when they do ALL THE WORK to generate the wealth of the entire system? Clearly that 1% is being paid way too much and those below 35k are being paid way too little. The TAX system is supposed to correct that to some degree so the 1% SHOULD pay way more tax than the SLAVES who make all the 1%'s money for them.

@CBA CBA Single person, no children, average salary: Germany - 40% tax, UK - 25% tax. Couple, two children: Germany - 21%, UK - 25%. Germans pay a lot more tax than we do. But they have a better-funded health service, better welfare system, better transport systems, a better standard of living ... Don't buy into the Tory spin about "Trickle Down Economics", it is a lie devised to feed the rich at the expense of everyone else.
