Drac, consider following Ian's example over at Forgotten Weapons and creating a specialty publishing house to produce books that you think valuable and nobody else is willing to publish. His is called Headstamp Publishing, I believe.

1:05:00 - Very minor but interesting point. I'm a WWII reenactor, and we have quite a number of M1 Garand rifles to outfit people at events. One of the ones we've acquired has this checkering pattern carved into the wood of the foregrip, and for a while we couldn't figure out why. It was obviously done at a factory. Turns out it's a naval-variant M1; apparently the Navy was concerned about keeping hold of the rifle if it was damp or wet.

In the man's own words: "When things get tough, they send for the sunzabitches."

After playing a fair bit of U-Boat lately, which does simulate duds, I can appreciate the tiniest bit of the world-ending rage they must have felt.
23
Or, in modern terms: "MORE DAKKA!!!!!"

58:00 - Given that the 501st PIR did in fact drop in Market Garden with the rest of the 101st Div, the gentleman in question would have been a replacement trooper. I imagine that makes it even more of a crapshoot in terms of identifying what ship he might have been on.

I would love a badge along the lines of "all the guns, please" for the USN <3

The more I hear about the US Bureau of Ordnance, the more I think its official motto should have been something along the lines of: "Because we say so." This directed both at the armed forces and at reality in general.

It was Sunday, IIRC

49:30 - Given that Marxism-Leninism functioned much like a state religion, I see the political officer on a Soviet ship very much in the role of chaplain, though with far more authority and duties than we would consider normal. The regular political meetings held aboard ship were eerily similar to church services.

01:56:05 - Sounds like you're writing your own series of books/mongraphs. You may want to consider publishing them in written format as well, though I realize that's another bucket of work.

I concur

I don't think "boarding a ship" and "being brought aboard a ship" are quite the same thing. ^_^
6
God bless you, dude. Stay safe.

1:03:00 - Unless you want to see various stuff along the way, NO. You do not want to drive across the USA. It's a minimum of 2 days (more likely 4+) of pure boredom if you're driving straight from coast to coast.

09:50 - The Wehrmacht was like saying 'Reich Armed Forces' or something similar. The 'Heer' was specifically the army. To avoid confusion I usually call it the "Wehrmacht Heer" when referring to it without prior context.
5
26:00 - Considering that the angle stays steady for so long, I think the cameraman made the very sensible decision to secure the camera down by some fashion, leave it running, and get under cover. Old-school video cameras could be left running on their own as long as the film lasted, right? Or did they need constant attention?

I'd love to see a similar video for Age of Sail warships, assuming there were any themes or consistency whatsoever. :)

00:52:00 - Why on earth wasn't the man relieved, when he was basically being constantly insubordinate?
4
If they do find the wreck, steps need to be taken to protect her from looters. Probably kinetic steps.
4
Praise the Omnissiah.

04:00 - Two of my favorite modern ones that I've heard are a pair of US CVNs. USS Theodore Roosevelt = "The Big Stick," and USS John Stennis = "Johnny Reb" :P
3
My solution to looting of underwater war graves are to toss down a few small depth charges on 'em. The looters, I mean
3
18:00 - This sounds like a round of "Space Station 14" 🤣
3
Shout-out to Mrs. Drac! <3
3
I love her radio callsign: "Starbase."
3
Easy to get the number of balls. Number of crew aboard, multiply by 2.
3
Too recent for this channel, but the Littoral Combat Ship program is a contemporary shoo-in for the "disaster" category.
3
@billgalactica2982 Exactly, excellent point. This is one of the upsides of the Internet; let's take full advantage of it!
3
It's happened to me at historical sites once or twice.
3
You win the Internet for today. Congratulations. <3
3
That sounds entirely plausible. I'm reminded of the Doolittle Raiders fitting painted-black broomsticks in place of the machine guns they dumped from their B-25s to save weight.
3
I would love to see much more on this topic. It's criminally underappreciated, and you just can't find good info on it without diving into that literal mountain of technical stuff Drach mentioned. A middle ground like this is wonderful. :)
3
The convoy stops for nobody. As I understand it (please correct me if I'm wrong, folks), you were basically fucked. Especially in the north Atlantic. :-/
3
04:50:00 - Not to dump on Jeremy Clarkson, but using logs as ground anchors was very common back in the day for descending mountain passes and similar situations where you were taking your automobile down a steep gradient. I know this from incidental accounts of tourist areas in the northwest of the USA renting logs for this purpose in the early 20th Century.
2
19:30 - I'm going to have to dock you 5 Internet Points for not including an 'inconceivable!' cut from "The Princess Bride," Drac. Sorry. <3
2
@808bigisland Either learn to troll properly or seek some counseling.
2
@MrChickennugget360 I stand corrected.
2
How on earth did the Canopus' captain not know his chief engineer's mental state and relieve him? If he hadn't noticed it himself, one assumes that another officer or a chief would bring it to his attention.
2
@timonsolus Thank you. Sounds like a multinational corporation these days.
2
You missed a re-take at about 1:35, Drac. <3
2
08:25 - WITNESS! WITNESS!
2
That is both wonderfully English-arrogant and highly amusing to my American self in one breath. Bravo! <3
2
"The Bloody Finally! Tour"
2
@glennricafrente58 Ooo, following from that, perhaps "a London Englishman in King Neptune's court" XD
2
@panzerabwerkanone HA! :D
2
14:00 - US subs keep "Zulu Time," i.e. GMT
2
I miss the old intro music. Much more fitting.
2
Dwarves don't have bread. We have beer.

Having administered half of a weeklong reenacting event by myself with nothing but a typewriter and a pencil, I too would be fascinated by how they managed inventory etc at scale. It's something you don't think about much in this computerized age... until you do, and you have an attack of existential dread.
