FYI, "Boise" is pronounced BOY-see. It's a city in the northwest part of the USA. :)

@looinrims Ein Nebelwerfer: it werfs nebel! 🤣

Note to self: plan to vacation in Munster in 5 or 6 years. ;)

2:10 - The Allied paratrooper stories from WW2 are mainly due to the Dramamine they were made to take to combat motion sickness. Though there is also some truth in what Herr Raths says. :)

IIRC siege warfare was more of an exact science during the Napoleonic era than at any other time in military history. A video about this--siege artillery, sapping, fortifications, etc--would be very interesting. :)

I'm a WWII reenactor, and when I used to do WSS we quoted that ALL the time. Like, constantly.

@TheNorthie Yeah... we get the occasional idiot who turns up. They either leave on their own very quickly, or we make them.

What's Russian for "shit happens"? :-/

@somethingelse516 I don't know who that is. I can tell you that the ones I know are largely military vets, and that nobody I know is a neo-Nazi or anything like that. Keeping accurate memory of something or someone doesn't mean you approve of it. Evil must be remembered alongside good, so we can recognize it when it recurs. Besides, the German uniforms are surprisingly comfortable. Not even kidding.

I can't help wondering if that extends to trucks in the age of motorization/mechanization.

HMS Victory can't sail anymore, Michal.

Just starting, and my gut reaction to the question is: "best general for what mission?"

A gorgeous Austrian man and a gorgeous German man talking about tanks for 20 minutes straight. Who needs Pornhub? :P

Immediate counterattack is practically a German trademark, historically speaking. More often than not, it works.

'Tis.

I wish I could post an image here; there's this one computer wallpaper I love. It's artwork depicting the Waffen-SS of the popular imagination. It's totally silly to anyone who knows anything about WWII, but it's such a cool image and it's a great capture of a bit of the world Zeitgeist.

@petersouthernboy6327 Not quite. I find it interesting how things are perceived in retrospect versus what they actually were.

FYI: "precipitous" is pronounced "pre-SIP-it-us," at least with an American accent. <3 "susceptible" is pronounced "sus-sept-i-bull" (small "i" pronunciation; not like the word "eye")

I thought that movie was quite yiffy, thank you very much. :P

I know you're being sarcastic, but still, please fuck off with that nonsense. Thank you. <3

1:46 - Typo; should be "OFF the field." :)

Yeah, depending on mods, Arma3 will take most of this into account. Trying to command multiple units via radio (ACRE) is very difficult and imprecise. Especially if you turn off data sharing (aka Blue Tracker) on the map. I've actually taken to using a real headquarters staff for large operations. Each staffer has the radio link to one or two specific squads, and we spend almost all our time during an engagement with our maps open. My staffers talk to their linked squads and mark the map as best they can. I examine the picture they build and give orders through them. Lots of fun once we find a rhythm, and it really works from a command & control perspective. One thing I learned the hard way: don't forget a couple of HQ guards. We have to be relatively close to maintain radio contact, so we set up a forward HQ in a forest or whatever. At first it was just us... until one night an AI squad came from an area we thought was clear and slaughtered the 4 of us while we had our noses in our maps. Naturally, this was in the middle of a complex multi-squad maneuver; Charlie never got the word to take the enemy in the flank, and by the time the guys realized we were dead they were defeated in detail. Steeling ourselves to not warn people via Steam Chat was the hardest thing I've ever had to do.

Depends on the game. ArmA is really more of a simulation than a game when you get down to it.

@erwin669 Was that the one with the Wehrmacht unit attacking through the forest?
1
@erwin669 Don't think I've seen that one then. I'll go look for it.

@vanpallandt5799 Fair enough. There is one WSS unit over here which used to be like that, though they've since mellowed out a fair bit. And they never talked it up outside themselves from what I gather; I only know about this by reputation. Still, they were/are the exception that proves the rule in our case. /shrug If your unit was full of nutcases, you were right to leave. Just like any other volunteer group.

I imagine this was one of the inspirations for the AAF mini-tanks in "Arma 3"

@Sheev Palpatine @andx6006 Good to know, thank you :)

@Lorian667 A fair point.

Never got around to watching this movie. Every time I hear about it, I'm reminded of why. I don't like to get as drunk as I'd have to be to make it through a whole movie like this...

That is the best straight-man performance I have ever seen.
