  1. Churchill was exactly the man Great Britain needed at the time, but I would not call him a truly great leader. In particular, he shared Hitler's delusion that he was, personally, a great strategist. This caused no end of annoyance for both British and German military commanders. In Germany's case, it led to the loss of the war. In Britain's case, it led to the ultimately useless Italian Campaign and the loss of most influence the UK originally had over their American counterparts. In turn, this lost them their Empire far sooner than would otherwise have been the case.
