If they were in open water when they were hit, the end would have been pretty quick. Those whose compartments were breached would have died or drowned very quickly, if not instantly. If any compartments remained intact, they would have died when the sub sank below its crush depth. A slow, lingering death scenario only happens when the sub can settle on the bottom without getting crushed, as with the Kursk for instance. Unless they were close in-shore of an island, I can't see that being likely in the western Pacific. So that's a tiny bit of cold comfort, I suppose. 😕
