Re: the submarine's anechoic tiles (the stuff peeling off): what you said about drag and more probably getting pulled off is true, but it also makes the sub much more vulnerable to detection, at least by active sonar. Whether that stuff matters at all for passive detectability (aside from the flow noise across the uneven hull, maybe?) I have no idea. Somebody ask Aaron over at Sub Brief.
