My old Underwood Portable doesn't have a "1" character either; the lowercase "l" character does double-duty.

@cuttingbored4195 I think mine has a specific glyph for the top half of an exclamation mark, but yes you backspace and add the period. Or vice versa. Same with a question mark IIRC. I can dig it out and check if you like but my field desk is buried in a bunch of other crates right now.

As a WWII reenactor who portrays a company clerk, I never get bored talking about typewriters. Seeing the Selectric in action makes me insanely jealous; I can't use anything that wasn't widely available by 1945.
