This puts the border tension between Belarus and Poland in a new light. A distraction, maybe?

Seriously, next time you go to a cave, bring somebody with you. You never know what might happen.

I think you nailed it. Russia's first and last concern has always been getting as much of a buffer around its heartland as it possibly can.

You should also be worried about your Chinese-made EV spontaneously catching on fire.

Just FYI, the word "corps" is pronounced the same as the word "core." Also, at least here in the USA we usually pronounce "Seoul" the same as the word "soul"; I'm not sure if that's correct, though. Excellent work as usual! <3

I'm actually into geopolitics, not shipping per se, but combining your amazing info with Sub Brief and a few other places sheds a surprising amount of light on what's going on around the world. The sea touches just about everything, after all.

India really deserves a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

Drac, consider following Ian's example over at Forgotten Weapons and creating a specialty publishing house to produce books that you think valuable and nobody else is willing to publish. His is called Headstamp Publishing, I believe.

1:05:00 - Very minor but interesting point. I'm a WWII reenactor, and we have quite a number of M1 Garand rifles to outfit people at events. One of the ones we've acquired has this checkering pattern carved into the wood of the foregrip, and for a while we couldn't figure out why. It was obviously done at a factory. Turns out it's a naval-variant M1; apparently the Navy was concerned about keeping hold of the rifle if it was damp or wet.
61
1:40 - FYI, the term you want is "airhead." It's what you call the area seized by paratroopers, analogous to a beachhead. :)

Just as a point of pedantry, back in the Age of Sail the difference between warships and merchant ships was very little. Partly so merchants could defend themselves, and partly because a nation's merchant marine doubled as its naval reserve. Once you hit roughly the Napoleonic era, the gap between naval and mercantile construction starts widening, and it's only grown ever since.

@GoodTimesBadTimes Don't apologize. English is a weird language, with lots of these homophones (that's the fancy term for when words are different but pronounced the same). I guarantee you that my occasional attempts to speak some Polish (my family's Polish on my mother's side) would make your ears bleed. ^_^

Si vis pacem, para bellum.

@MilitaryHistoryNotVisualized Good point. The term "airhead" when used of a person (in America, at least) does not refer to drug use, but to somebody who is vapid, or just plain stupid. The word especially brings to mind the stereotype of the very pretty woman with no apparent brain activity. ^_^ Edit: we do have a number of similar terms that do refer to drug use, such as "pothead" or "crackhead." I actually reenact the US 502nd Parachute Infantry regiment ca. 1944-45, and "airhead" is a term that comes up when you read about the doctrine of vertical envelopment. I forget offhand if I've ever seen it in a primary source, but it's been used in several historical works that I've seen. It is, of course, an adaptation of the term "beachhead." :)
26
Good to see you back, dude! As for what I think, I think that we need to slap Russia down before things really get out of hand. Of course, that's easy to say sitting in my chair on the other side of the world. :-/
20
After this, I'd say the King's Cross fire should logically come next. All the horror of this terrible story, with the added nightmare of being stuck underground. 😕
19
Looking forward to the new series! :)

"Everyone wants their independence... until they run out of money." --Sir Humphrey Appleby, "Yes, Minister"
17
I've said this before, but drawing down our (USA) armed forces, especially our Navy, so far has been an epic mistake. I'm not sure we have time left to correct it, especially in the naval sphere; building ships takes years, and building fleets takes decades.
16
11:15 - For future videos, the term "Mk." is short for the English word "mark" and is pronounced as such when read aloud. So in this instance, "mark-82 bombs." (Yes, I'm being pedantic, but this sort of thing bothers my OCD.)
15
Your wardrobe definitely works for your new title, Sal. :D
14
Speaking as an American, I feel bound to point out that even when we question the validity of our election results (spoiler warning: we ALWAYS do), we don't take up arms to redress the situation. Even in our Civil War, it was certain states wanting to leave the country, not impose their will by force. This is not to say our system is perfect. In fact, it's pretty damn messy. But that's the nature of democracy/republic, and you have to grit your teeth and bear with it. Especially when it's unpleasant. On the basis of the information presented here, my only attitude towards the heads of the Myanmar military is contempt.
12
The "Mk" in weapon names is short for the work "mark" and is pronounced as such. <3

Excellent video. But nobody likes to talk about the giant issue with electric cars: the electricity has to come from somewhere. Mostly, that means coal, oil, or nuclear.
12
Looking at history, each Great World Power has about a century before someone else takes the top spot. If we say that the US took over from Great Britain in roughly 1945 (though that's highly debatable), then we have another 20 years or so before China takes over. Though Great Britain itself is an exception to the hundred-years rule, they were dominant for much longer. So who knows? What I do know is that we in the USA need to start massively expanding our Navy NOW if we are to have any hope of retaining our current hegemony. Building ships takes time.

I do think the narrator switch was a good idea, and Michael actually has a good voice IMHO. It is a bit gravelly, as people have said, but that's not a bad thing. That said, Mike, your delivery this episode was a bit flat. Not droning, but I would suggest developing more of a varied cadence. It makes for a better listening experience. This is something that simply takes practice, so just work on it as you narrate more videos. <3

Excellent work. If anybody wants further depth on this history, IMHO the definitive work is still William Schirer's "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich." Try to find the original non-condensed version. I've studied WWII most of my life, and my prime takeaways from the rise of the NSDAP are as follows: - Beware of anyone who participates in political process and does not respect the spirit of the rules. Marginalize such people if you can; they are profoundly corrosive to the political process they are subverting, regardless of their ideology and motivation. - Reason will not spontaneously break out if you do not speak up as loudly and forcefully as you can in opposition to crazy people. (Whatever kind of crazy.) - Wherever you are, it CAN happen there, and it WILL if you ever let it.

Fascinating as always! :)

Fascinating. I'm going to watch through your back catalog, and sub. <3

I usually wind up being the driver when we use tanks in "Arma 3" (nobody else wants to), and yeah, you can't see ANYTHING. So I guess the vehicle modelers got that right. Next time I will crank the heat in my apartment way up for an even more immersive experience. ^_^

Looks like a pretty standard arrest, except that the suspect wised up and started cooperating a lot faster than many I've seen (at secondhand). Clean and professional, to judge from this edited footage at least. :)
6
You missed "cost cutting" on the bingo card. I'm no engineer, but I'm pretty sure that's why the upper floors were built with such little reinforcement.
6
This video was particularly interesting to narrate, as my late paternal grandfather served as a tank commander with the US forces during this war.
6
In my homeland of America, the use of what amounts to distilled water for medical purposes is still quite widespread. I believe the term for this primitive practice is "homeopathy."
6
I've cast my write-in for Trump, but only because he's not the "looney left." I consider them more dangerous than the "looney right" at the moment. I have a degree in history, and actually living through such a period of instability has given me a totally new perspective on all this stuff I've read about over the years. The scary thing is that I know full well just how bad this could get, for everyone. 'Normal' Americans are caught between extremes, and if we can't reign these people in very bad things will happen. Not sure what exactly, and I really don't want to find out.
5
@GoodTimesBadTimes I look forward to it! A channel called Covert Cabal (much more grounded than the username suggests) has great analyses on missile systems etc, you may want to check him out. :)
5
Has anyone gotten together the reasonable voices from all sides of this discussion and started drafting proposals for what the needed reforms might actually look like? If not, that seems to be a logical next step. Remember, if everybody's unhappy with the proposal but everyone can live with it, it's a good compromise.
5
Hearing the presenter guess that the accident was due to power loss and the 'failure' of the diesel generators to start makes me kind of cringe. If I'd walked into Langley at this time and told them the Soviets kinda did this to themselves while running an ill-conceived experiment and bypassing the plant's safety systems to that end... I wonder if anyone would have believed me.
4
I'd love to see a similar video for Age of Sail warships, assuming there were any themes or consistency whatsoever. :)
4
@wgowshipping Every public speaker naturally develops their own catchphrases. Just don't lean into it on purpose, and otherwise don't worry about it. ;)
4
A gorgeous Austrian man and a gorgeous German man talking about tanks for 20 minutes straight. Who needs Pornhub? :P

You had me at "historiography." ❤

If these skeletal remains are actually common here in North America, I would encourage those who believe in them to actually go find some. With real, physical evidence you can blast it far and wide. Make sure to have hidden people filming things in case the excavators get attacked by ninjas, though. Then you'll have hard evidence of the cover-up. ^_^ Seriously, folks. Hard evidence or GTFO. Great work as usual, N02! :)
3
So we have "What the Ship" and "What the Truck"... someone needs to start a channel/show/podcast called "What the Haul" next. 🤣
3
@PhilipThompson It happens. You got them right for the rest of the video, FWIW. Love your work! ❤
3
You do good work, N02, but you do realize that there's a LOT more copyright-free music available than the "Skyrim" soundtrack, right? Here's one good source among a great many: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwF4bAx_W482_AQu-mv1vWg

Why do you never recommend dog videos, Sean? Are they just too good for the undesirables? 🤣

Basically, the Powers That Be wanted to know if a plant of this design could put out enough power as it was spinning down to continue to power the cooling systems. (Nuclear reactors require power for cooling even when they're not operating.) The idea was to test an emergency plan for if the plant had to shut down and the diesel generators and grid power were both unavailable. So not a stupid idea in that respect. The problem is that, in order to run this test, they had to turn off all the safety systems and redundancy. The irony was, because the reactor design was actually pretty decent, it didn't want to be in a dangerous situation like they were forcing onto it. The operators, under a political mandate to do this test, ignored all the many warning signs of trouble and basically blew up their own reactor as a result. There's all sorts of excellent presentations, papers, and books on what happened. Just search around the 'Net. What's interesting is to compare Chernobyl with what happened at Three Mile Island and Fukushima and see the different failures that occurred in each case.

04:30 - I just had a thought. Should we expect a higher incidence of cancer in the local population over the coming years from all the various burn products leeching into the soil etc? How long will they persist as people begin rebuilding their homes? I know that firefighters have been suffering massively from long-term health complications due to this phenomenon.
2
Amen.

I think the greater long-term significance of the Titanic disaster was the imprint it made on the news media. It was the first major disaster of the modern media era, and in retrospect it formed the blueprint for how all crises/disasters are covered to some degree. That said, I find your thesis quite compelling as well. Well reasoned. ❤

Llamas! ❤🦙

Good stuff. :)

I feel like you've been bringing us a lot of bad news about car carriers over the past few months. Are there just lots of these things on the sea?
1
Also, please do just a few excerpts from the hearings with sock puppets. That would be worth doing just to make a point. 😂
1
Love the new channel icon!

Nothing wrong with being a loudmouth, Sal. Just don't accept any position that involves a security clearance, is all. 🤣
1
@SpyCollectionChannel Thanks!

Sal, the Dali situation got mainstream play because a collapsed bridge makes for dramatic visuals. None of the commentators understood or cared about the impact on the port, shipping, or any such thing. This is a single fatality, no video, and a Chinese-owned ship. The knee-jerk reaction in many quarters is still not to say anything bad about the PRC.

In regards to MSC, I will observe for the zillionth time in history that amateurs are concerned with gear and tactics, while professionals are concerned first and foremost with logistics. What does this say of those making overall policy for the US defense establishment?
1
As a natural-born US citizen, I can say that we absolutely have problems. Lots of them. But we don't really seem inclined to address the actual problems in a meaningful way. That said, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the world.

The quality of video from that pen just blew my mind. 😱

I love this series. Very well-produced, and great to share with people who aren't already into this stuff. <3
