  1. Which "then" do you mean? The "golden age" library and any remnants destroyed by Caesar would have been scrolls. The changeover took place in the first to third centuries. The later libraries would have had books in "codex" form, shaped more or less like modern books. The English word "book" applies to both forms: scrolls and codices. Public access borrowing libraries came much later, after the printing press made books relatively plentiful and cheap.
