No, that's not why the Soviets objected. They objected because it could end their blackmail against CONVENTIONAL confrontation directly between the West and the Soviet Bloc by rendering their first strike threat moot. It would also drive home the technological dominance of the West. MAD is essentially a TERROR strategy, which gives a practical advantage to the more ruthless side. Nuclear defense, TO ANY DEGREE, lessens that advantage.

Fortunately, it can extend it's reentry glide for 421 days, giving it a significant crossrange/downrange capability, and a secondary aerial recon ability. 😀 (I am an inveterate YT comment section poster and I have NEVER used an emoji before. I am of the emoticon generation. :-] )

@floseatyard8063 "I don't think it would change the orbits angle" If your vehicle has a lifting body, like the Shuttle, or Dyna Soar, you can turn it at an angle and get an orbital plane change maneuver out of an atmosphere skim. Even a blunt heat shield like an Apollo Command Module or an Orion capsule can do this a little.
