  1. Another possibility that should be considered, though I get it from a work of fiction. Tom Clancy was at least a student of the Soviet Union, the military apparatus in particular. In his bestselling story Red Storm Rising, about a 80s era conventional attack on West Germany, there was a purge of Soviet officers for corruption and readiness offenses before the attack. As endemic as corruption was in the Soviet system, they were willing to take the stability and political risk to clean up aspects of the corruption that pertained to readiness, to ready the Soviet Army for action. It could be that what we're seeing is an effort to enhance readiness to clear the deck for action, particularly in light of the educational shortcomings of the Russian conquest efforts in Ukraine. It is possible that we're witnessing an actual phenomenon, not disinformation, but are drawing the wrong conclusions from the evidence. But if there are serious readiness problems, it will probably take a few months, at least, to sort them. Imminent invasions or not, I would hate to see an ACTUAL readiness purge, for obvious reasons.

  2.  @OakInch  "more made up nonsense." If you mean made up by the Chinese to cover something more embarrassing or strategically sensitive, that's always possible. But there would have to be a REASON for them to do so, because China is less internally stable and with lower morale than it has been at least since the 90s, therefore they regard any embarrassment as dangerous at this time. The concentration on the military and related officials suggest the possibility that this is a readiness purge to try to make their military effective in anticipation of their planned attack. A purely political purge is likely to be less occupation specific.
