A later "Free Press" video addresses very nearly this question with Douthat.

@junodonatus4906 An assertion is not an argument. Name calling is not rebuttal.

Spatial substances ground physical phenomena. Minds do activities. You're just stating materialist/physicalist dogma in other words. There is nothing in matter and physics that explains or allows for a subjective observer (us). The notion that consciousness is an epiphenomenon of physics is a category error. Astrophysics shows us that matter cannot be "primary" in the sense of being ground of being, because it began. Mind remains as a candidate.

All of the world, or just the parts you don't like?

"What am I supposed to do?" How about not fighting or opposing religion? I think that belief in G_d is a logical conclusion of investigation of the evidence, but that's a bit far afield from the subject. If the "answer is yes", and the moral pragmatism toward the end of human flourishing which many atheists and agnostics profess is your guiding light, then you get out of the way of, or perhaps passively support, such a revival. If you don't believe in moral pragmatism toward human flourishing but hold that morality is bunk then by definition there can be nothing that one "should" do, and you will act as a robot agent of your appetites. Denying your humanity works.

@hamster4618 " isn’t JC human sacrifice ?" Of course not. "Human sacrifice" is a religious term for a particular sort of deal. Person A sacrifices person B for the sake of person A. A perfectly selfish ploy on the part of person A. That's the moral problem with human sacrifice. Christianity turns on person A sacrificing person A for the sake of person B. The technical term for this is "self sacrifice". Perfectly UNSELFISH on the part of person A. This is the moral opposite of "human sacrifice". This deception is based on the notion that a soldier who throws himself on a grenade to save his comrades is the moral equivalent of islanders that throw a virgin into a volcano to appease the volcano god. This is so absurd a child could see through it.
