The reason for favoring ISS over Artemis NOW is because Boeing and the established aerospace industrial complex is now known to have a bigger slice of the ISS pie than the Artemis pie. That does not dispose of the practical question, but it is important to note that the motivational base of current decisions is corrupt and irrational.

We don't need to go to the Moon to plant a flag on Mars. However, by far the most efficient way to COLONISE Mars is using the support of an industrial/mining Moon base. Mars simply will not be colonized without one.

Only the next generation satellites will be able to do that, the ones with laser crosslinks. The current satellites need ground stations under them to give live Internet coverage. They could probably do post and forward espionage communications with the right software, but any old satellite can do that.

@angryrat7882 For that matter, friendly places do need rapid deployment of light troops from time to time. The initial deployment of Desert Shield was a rapid deployment of airborne units. But there also have been operations where the airborne parachutes in and is extracted by (say) Marines. Starship is supposed to be able to land on Mars with no receiving infrastructure. It should be more flexible in its landing options than a fixed wing jet transport. And it might have enough fuel left for takeoff and a hop to a friendly base (given that US bases are distributed liberally worldwide, and some of the supplies shipped would have been expended or could be abandoned). Remember, Starship is supposed to have SOME fuel left in a orbital deployment with payload. A land to land hop from US to anywhere on Earth requires substantially less delta-v than getting to orbit, and Starship is capable of stretching range a little in this sort of mission with its modest atmospheric "cross range" capability. +Hedgehobbit (scrubbed) Are you projecting a delay on the third operational flight of Crew Dragon to a general future tendency for unplanned last minute delays for future SpaceX craft regardless of the maturity of the program? That seems irrational.

As for that other thing, the graphics are lousy and the story line is worse (but I'll admit that you can't beat the frame rate).

Space Habs are neat, but you can't mine anything except on celestial bodies. Moon colony is precursor to ANY space colonies. It's where you get resources for space exploration/exploitation in a shallow gravity well and no atmosphere so you can use a mass driver to export materials and products from the Moon. Building space habs will be cheaper once we can access lunar materials to build them from.

A major untapped ISRU concept is building an orbital infrastructure largely out of decommissioned orbiting hardware: orbital salvage, if you will. It would require some industrial infrastructure to be launched, but there is a LOT of junk flying around out there (from defunct satellites and spent boosters to dropped wrenches), and it is not mingled oxide dust like regolith, but instead refined metals, plastics, glass, and silicon; usable electronic and structural components. Despite these materials being in widely divergent orbits, concentrating them should still be much cheaper than lifting new mass from the Earth since they can be moved by high specific impulse ion thrusters. This would also mitigate the proliferation problem by making fewer and larger structures with a lower ratio of cross section to mass, making the "Kessler Syndrome" prospect less likely and severe. For this reason, it always saddens me a little when space hardware gets deorbited. (with the possible exception of LEO hardware in high traffic areas where they will fall shortly anyway. A mature salvage infrastructure could eventually recycle even these, but we need to survive to get there.) CONSIDERED IN ISOLATION, "reorbiting" rather than deorbiting the ISS may well be cheaper, but the infrastructure to do so (the ion tug), might well prove quite useful and efficient in the long run.

The only mechanism whereby moon dust can remain suspended is electrostatic repulsion. In an atmosphere, low gravity can delay settling of dust. On the moon dust is kicked up by motion, (footsteps, rover wheels, etc) and falls right back down. Without an atmosphere, a bowling ball and a feather fall at the same rate.
