It had not yet been invented at the nations founding.   3.  Ben McKean  I only brought in the French revolution in response to your "leftist" terminology, and on mature reflection, I might have overstated my case. The French revolution happened after our nation's founding, but during the Washington administration, so most of the founders were still around to be called "left" or "right". When the French revolutionaries gifted the key to the Bastille to Washington, he displayed it next to a portrait of Louis the whateverth, as a symbol of US neutrality toward the French Revolution. Paine was probably pretty "left", as he left the US to support the French Revolution. Like almost everybody who was politically active in France in those days, he ended up running afoul of the revolutionary council, but he was released to the US due to US diplomatic pressure.
