@StArShIpEnTeRpRiSe "at Normandy the Germans doesn't had anti-ship missiles. On a modern amphibious assault scenario, a battleship will be sunk before it can suppress the coastal defense fire." Battleships were brought out of mothballs and used to fire at land targets in the Korean War, Vietnam, and Operation Desert Storm. In each of those cases the enemy had anti-ship missiles. No battleships were hit by missiles.

"the battle of Jutland in 1916 was the last naval engagement where battleships were used as the primary comattants" Interesting wording. The last naval engagement where the primary combatants engaged were battleships on either side and the deciding arm was the Battle of Surigao Straight in WW2. The US battle line crossed the Japanese "T" as the Japanese approach was limited by the geography of the strait.

@StArShIpEnTeRpRiSe All the new capitol ships were missile armed by Vietnam. The 16 inch guns of the revised Iowa class WERE fired both at the coastal defenses to feign an amphibious landing, and in support of the direct advance up the coast by coalition forces. They were also fired at enemies in the Lebanon operation during the Reagan administration.

@tz8785 " For serious suppression fire just before the landing, the rate of fire of heavy naval guns is rather low." In a projection of power, the use of guns is more sustainable, economically and logistically. You can carry a lot more shells than rockets in the same weight/volume.
