The state does not have legitimate default access to the child. Our society provides checks and balances for all authority, even parental authority. That is not a sign that parental authority is not legitimate by default. "A human being deserves to make choices that are not dependent on parents" A minor is not equipped to make the life changing choices under consideration. There are sound psychological reasons for parental authority over a child. Nobody else has as strong a motive NOT to use the child instrumentally for a political agenda. The parent naturally SEES all your moral considerations (if any) and RAISES you a powerful natural love and the personal knowledge of the individual's needs that comes from having lived with the child all the child's life. "parents who want to dominate their child's choices in perpetuity are irrational authoritarians." Childhood is not perpetual (despite the state's attempt to make it so). The STATE has a natural tendency to want to dominate the everybody's choices in perpetuity, and it is vital to our freedom and general well being that it be held in check.

@elephantoflight3362 "What parent has a degree and experience in education?" As though a degree conveys authority and motive. The parents hire teachers to perform a service for them. I may take a plumber's advice on how to fix my flooded basement. I won't take his advice on WHETHER my basement is flooded, still less on whether it should be. The actions a workman takes in my house are under my authority and he is answerable to me by right and under the law for them. This was the case even when an education degree was about making one expert in educating, rather than indoctrination, which is now the case. The FIRST place the neo-marxist "long march through the institutions" took over was the teacher's college. Nowadays a teaching degree is the diametric opposite of a qualification or recommendation for a position of responsibility in free republic. And make no mistake, our body politic established a republic, not a technocracy. Experts can play a subordinate role in administering society, but they answer to the public. Generals may be military experts, but they aren't allow to do with the army as they please. That is not how our checks and balances work and for good and sufficient reason. There is nothing in a body of knowledge, nothing in science for a scientist, nothing in medicine for a doctor, that would keep them from self-serving and doing evil.

@elephantoflight3362 "Random parents, do not run schools…. Period…" Parents of students enrolled in a public school SHOULD run the school. Any authority that seeks to undermine this is illegitimate. A body of knowledge does not convey legal authority as a rule.

Is it an entity that is and ought to be responsible to the parents for your instruction? From "A has a natural and legal realm of responsibility" it does not follow that "A's realm of responsibility and authority is everything."

@elephantoflight3362 You're just full of assertions, aren't you? If what you said were true in principle, the schools would have no justification for their existence. The children are wards of their parents, not of the state.

@Spiritof_76 What exactly are you denying? That the hierarchy of the education bureaucracy are union members? Some POLITICIANS are opposing them, but they simply own the bureaucracy, because they simply ARE the bureaucracy. Give me an example of the bureaucracy "opposing" them.

@elephantoflight3362 "When has a Republican ever lowered the national debt?" So long as we're clear on the division of labor. Democrats run up the debt to buy votes and Republicans take the political hit to reduce it. The last time the budget was balanced was in the 90s under Newt Gingrich and the Contract With America. The last time anything was done about the budget it was a Republican and his caucus that stopped running it up. Next stupid question.
