In the context of the World Inequality Report, getting workers back to work is essential because otherwise 70% of all land, capital and tools would be unused, unproductively consumed. If mandates and vaccines get people back to work the top 10% are happy. It means labor and capital are rejoined and the means are productively consumed. But if labor and capital remain apart then societies are in peril of survival.
But for the many who are unvaccinated the mandates cut into personal freedom outside of work. The contradiction is no freedom of choice on the job, be vaccinated or be out of a job. The employer position brings into question the half-nature of freedom in America. Are we free when you are not free? The report shows a humanity divided into three parts. The poorest, the middle, and the rich. The rich who have the means are few with the greatest freedom inside work and outside of the job, and the poor who have no income or wealth and no freedom if they do have a job, n choice but to be vaccinated or perish. Our minds and bodies are not fully owned by us on the job(s) becomes the philosophical and legal question of what defines citizenship as free in modern America?
World Inequality Report of 2022, Thomas Pikety and Emmanuel Siaz, Lucas Chancel and Gabrielle Zuckman, released Dec 12, 2022 The report tracks capitalism over 3 centuries.
Bottom 50% of 2.2 billion people have no income and even less wealth. Poorest 50% got under 10% to share all the income there was to be had. In contrast, the richest 10% got 52% of all income. The middle, (you and I fit in this group) 40% of 2.2 billion people got 40% of all income to be had. 50% of us (2.2 bn) own 2% of wealth. Top 10% own 76% of the world’s wealth.
