When I was a kid, we would go camping by a river every summer. Once there had been a lot of rain, so the reservoir upstream was full, but they knew that people would swim in the river during the day so every day they would turn down the flow, and every night they would turn up the flow. The first night we spent there we didn’t know this, so we set up our tent and went to sleep. We woke up in the middle of the night all wet and had to move our tent. If opening the sluice has no effect on the water level, how do you explain my experience camping that summer?

@hamyield , You’re confused. There had been a lot of rain in the winter. We went camping in the summer. There was no flooding. The water level increased because of something that they did at the dam upstream. So, if they didn’t open the sluice, what did they do every night?

@rogink , True. It wasn’t the Dnipro, but it was a river, and there was a dam upstream that was doing something that was causing the river to rise every night, and it hadn’t rained for months, despite there being plenty of rain months prior.

@stanley1554 , We weren’t right next to the water. We were at least 5ft above the daytime water level. We also went camping there every summer, and this only happened one summer.

@klubstompers , Obviously if the sluice is always open, you can’t change the water level by opening. Duhhhh…. If the sluice is already open, then to change the downstream water level, you must close the sluice. Do you understand the meaning of “open” and “close”?

@klubstompers , This is not what Hemuyield said. He said “Opening the sluice…” To open a sluice, it must start off closed, then be opened.

@klubstompers , So then it raised the water level 5 months ago. When it was opened.

@jeffreykidwell3335 , Exactly…

@klubstompers , So there’s no water heading to Crimea now?

Just a turtle , Russians obviously love garbage. Have you seen their trenches? The Ukrainian homes they’ve occupied? 90% of their country? They feel right at home in garbage dumps.
