Joe Justjoe, I believe you're incredibly confused. The market doesn't have to drive the price up to $420. Why do you believe that? What kind of logic are you using in your brain to come up with the idea that it matters whether the market drives the stock price up to $420 or not? Do you not understand what Musk said? I'll try to make this really simple for you. Musk claimed to have secured funding for buying shares for $420. That means that someone out there who Musk spoke to has offered to pay $420 per share to buy all the shares of everyone who wants to sell their shares at $420. Then, after buying all those shares for $420/share, the company would delist its stock and become a private company. Obviously this would only happen if the current shareholders vote yes. If for some reason the stock price goes above $420, then nobody would vote yes. That would be dumb. If the stock is at $430, why would you sell it to someone for $420? That would be really stupid. But, if the stock is at $380, then a bunch of people would want to make $40 more profit by selling for $420 to whoever Musk made this agreement with. I really hope you understand this because it's not very complicated and I shouldn't even have had to explain this to you.

TheMightyHarihar, The best option for a long term investor is to buy now, then wait until Tesla goes public again later about 10 years from now. If you're that kind of investor, then why do you care about liquidity? And if you can't afford to have your investment tied up for the next 10 years, then you probably shouldn't be investing in Tesla anyway. Because in the short term, you'll likely lose money and not be able to afford to wait it out.

Joe Justjoe, Do you believe that Elon was lying about already having secured funds? There is absolutely no need for any current shareholders to drive the price up to $420 if the funds to purchase all the shares from those who want to sell has already been secured. All that needs to happen is that the board has to agree and the shareholders have to agree. I seriously doubt that Elon is lying, because if he is, he could be in trouble with the SEC. I believe he knows that and therefor wouldn't lie about this.
