The Ford Panther Platform (Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, Town Car, Marauder) have puncture resistant gas tanks and some Crown Vic P71s have a fire suppression system in case the car is rear ended hard enough to cause the fuel tank to leak. The fuel tank sits behind the rear seat and in front of the trunk. These cars, and most Ford vehicles, have an emergency fuel pump shut off switch they call an inertia switch that is spring loaded and will pop when it's hit hard enough and shut off power to the fuel pump which will kill the engine and prevent the fuel pump from pumping gas all over the place if a line is ruptured and will theoretically make it harder for a fire to result from unnecessary fuel loss other than the tank itself rupturing.

Cars went from being big and beautiful to tiny and ugly AF during the malaise era when cars shrunk considerably and had tons of emissions related vacuum leaks and were poorly designed in every way. The early 90s began the modern car with computer controlled fuel injection and spark instead of carburetors and distributors. The best vahicles ever made with the highest quality and fewest government mandated emissions related fluids like DEF were the early 2000s.

The moral of the story is to never drive with more than $5 worth of gas in the tank and never fill it up. Only put in a gallon at a time when it's running on fumes or has completely run out of gas...
