  1. Ian's narrative on China lacks critical analysis. The are reasons why China didn't wholeheartedly adopt the American model especially after the 2008 financial crisis, and then the 2016 elections. First is that there are some serious flaws to the American capitalism and democratic elections where far from the best outcome was achieved. (a disaster in both cases) Second its not apparent China needs to transition to a liberal democracy in order to be a responsible stakeholder if not lead the world. China has already stepped up its leadership in the UN, IMF and World Bank, however has been limited by American's efforts to limit China's role rather than supporting China into the existing framework. In which case if America fails to weave China into the exiting fabric, China will likely create its own institutions and its own sphere of influence.

  3. Ian still doesn't get it and needs to be thanking China. Looking at America's response after China warned everyone about the virus, it's highly doubtful America's response to the virus would be better than China's initial response. America's response were it caught by surprise like China did would have been far worse, and would have not shut down any of the days during the 2 week New Years holiday. China provided America and the world precious time to prepare for the virus which America squandered.

  11. The Economist articles have gotten much more populist under Zanny Minton Beddoes. Rather than presenting critical thinking from China's point of view as with John Micklethwait, Zanny Beddoes just goes along with whichever hipster like view is most acceptable and goes along with that. The facts are China is a responsible stake holder in the world, if anything more so than America these days. There are weaknesses with concentration of power, but it is still preferable to America's near nearsightedness of having to change legislature every 2 years, and a change of executives every 4 years.

COVID19 with 108 deaths, and 6421 confirmed infections. How Americans have exported the virus in their travel? What is the percentage of Americans wearing face masks, less then 1% maybe .001%. How many millennials and Gen Z on their spring break actually practice social distancing? Sounds like you've just argued US created a much bigger sanction-able offense. The local government in China made some mistakes early on, they were criticized and removed promptly from the central government afterwards. That said the decision wasn't clear cut; when you have a country 1.4 Billion people randomly announcing there's a new SARs virus before it was confirmed is like shouting fire in the middle of the theater. To answer your question China is a global leader other countries should look up to as an alternate model to US, as a multi-polar world in my opinion is much better than one with just a US model. (A model by the way which elected a reality tv star as its president)

  15. Just the opposite the reason US is in a weakened state is because of the protectionism, de-globalization, and "me first" policies. A pandemic could have started anywhere if not in China then in Africa, Middle East, even one that came from US. By starting a trade war, decoupling, and haphazard coordination with China and rest of the world it has left US very vulnerable whenever a crisis emerges.

New Year's in China is bigger than Thanksgiving, black Friday, Cyber Monday, NYE, super bowl, and spring break combined. America had plenty of time to manage the outbreak, while China was caught by surprise, and still have more cases and deaths than China. Not surprising given America has incompetence in Chief as president.

America led IMF/World Bank trapped emerging economies into a debt trap, which China's belt and road initiative has carefully avoided, and America's unilateral trade war with all countries weakens not only America but all countries around the world, and America's de-funding of WHO causes even more death in the middle of a pandemic.   33. Ian's timeline is incorrect. America had been peddling conspiracy theories in official and social media on origination of the COVID-19 long before China took a stance and spoke out against it. That is the possibility of virus originated from American bio-lab is equally likely if not more so than a Chinese one. The "original sin" if occurred in America during a holiday which is Thanksgiving, black Friday, cyber Monday, Christmas, New Years Eve, Super Bowl, and Spring Break combined America would have responded much later on travel restrictions and lock-downs. The only reason America even initiated lock-downs is because it copied from China's model as CDC and WHO did not believe a lockdown would work and advised against it to China.

That's certainly not the case with China's belt and road initiative, although caution is recommended most of it is just propaganda and politics. The anti-american bias is warranted since we've got 3rd string team Trump assembled. The A-Team never wanted to join, and the B-team either quit or was fired.

  46. Singapore and Taiwan with population 5.6, and 24 million respectively is hardly comparable to managing a country of 1.4 Billion people with a health crisis. Furthermore both Singapore and Taiwan have the benefit of the climate being warm which should make virus less infectious. I've always thought China's expelling US journalists is to balance recent US expelling of Chinese journalists, and limiting number of people Chinese media can have in US.
