Ian's narrative on China lacks critical analysis. The are reasons why China didn't wholeheartedly adopt the American model especially after the 2008 financial crisis, and then the 2016 elections. First is that there are some serious flaws to the American capitalism and democratic elections where far from the best outcome was achieved. (a disaster in both cases) Second its not apparent China needs to transition to a liberal democracy in order to be a responsible stakeholder if not lead the world. China has already stepped up its leadership in the UN, IMF and World Bank, however has been limited by American's efforts to limit China's role rather than supporting China into the existing framework. In which case if America fails to weave China into the exiting fabric, China will likely create its own institutions and its own sphere of influence.

@mangalores-x_x Whereas America withhold funding for countries that don't investigate their election opponents, to UN institutions such as WHO, or unilateral sanctions, and freeze their bank accounts.
