@YThome7 "a true Ukrainian"...? And what does a "true russian" do? I'm just curious, because to anyone in the world who has opened their eyes at any point in the past 12 months, it looks like "true russians" will loot, rape, torture, murder and even if they don't do any of that, they will unquestionably shuffle to a horrendous death to keep a gangster in power, just because.

Precisely because the EU (along with the rest of the world) is far from perfect in this respect, I believe that Ukraine joining while they're on this massive anti-corruption drive will raise standards for all member states, and beyond. From someone who grew up in Italy.

@jmack619 There's no "mediation" to be done, russians need to withdraw from all occupied territories back to 1991 borders and start paying reparations. Anything other than a resounding defeat for russia just means more war

@jmack619 And what do you think would happen to all those "innocent lives"(and many more) if putin was in charge?

@amadeuz8161 That's a very different thing from what's mentioned in the video

@amadeuz8161 You made a fair point - I don't have an answer about the UK, or any other country. I don't think Ukraine would criminalise people trying to stay alive but they are rightly criminalising people trying to profit from this situation. What I said is that I don't think that's why looting was mentioned in this video, which is about one country's efforts to combat a culture of corruption at a time of war. My impression is that they were saying that corruption at this time is the same as looting - i.e. not looting to survive, but to make money from the possessions of people who've had to flee their homes because of the shelling or occupation. Which has also been going on in Ukraine - crime rates have apparently gone down over the past 12 months, but like all countries they're bound to have their share of callous criminals. I live in inner London and I can just imagine what would happen in my neighbourhood, in similar circumstances. Breaking into an empty home to look for food and water for yourself or your kids is not the same as lifting every undamaged appliance and selling it for profit. Btw remember the news story about a woman knocking a drone out of the air by throwing a jar of home-made pickles from her balcony? From early on in the full-scale invasion. That was not a russian drone, that was looters looking for properties to clean out.
