The Palestinian people have been treated like vermin on their own land for decades. I'm not remotely cheering what Hamas is doing now, but please think before writing stuff like this.

Thank you. And I say that as someone who's not remotely a fan of Hamas - what's being done to Israeli civilians is horrific and will make things even worse for Palestinians, who have been suffering for decades, as you have summarised so well. However as a supporter of Ukraine I can see why most Ukrainians empathise with Israel right now, and I also understand their need to get Israel to understand the consequences of "keeping russia on side" (btw Sternenko released an excellent video about this today).

@Hermod1995 Nothing I have written so far condones Hamas' current conduct. But everything that Israel has done to Palestinians over the decades will not and should not fade away because of what Hamas is doing now, and that's important. As said earlier by Palestine's ambassador to the UN - and let's pause for a moment to consider how hard this man's job is - statements about “Israel’s right to defend itself” could be interpreted by the Israeli government as “a licence to kill” (reported by the BBC). The Israeli army has been feeling entitled to brutalise and murder Palestinian civilians for a long time, they really don't need the international community's permission to do even worse.

@PrinceChaloner Considering the way they've been treated for so long (again: on their own land, and also in full view of the rest of the world, which has done next to nothing about Israel's constant human rights violations), it is not surprising that many Palestinians would come to support a hardline organisation like Hamas. From their point of view, what's happening now is Israelis experiencing what life is like for most Palestinians most of the time. I do NOT support what's happening at the moment, not least because it will only make things worse for Palestinians and everyone's suffering is off the scale. But we can't lose sight of the whole picture.

russia is literally cheering the loss of life in Israel and most probably have a hand in the current escalation. They don't give a damn about Palestinian lives either, they're just accidentally speaking some truths about human rights violations in Palestine purely because it suits them. Please don't fall into their trap. I support Ukraine as I have always supported Palestine - not Hamas, and not what they're doing right now, especially because it's making things 100 times worse for Palestinians - and it does make sense to me how Ukrainians would see what's going on right now and empathise with the people of Israel. Ukrainians also have a huge stake in getting Israel to understand that "keeping russia on side", as they've been trying to do for nearly two years, always ends in tears. We need to keep speaking the whole truth, no matter how uncomfortable and difficult that is.
